Hard drive partition that is used by systems using EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) is termed as EFI System partition. Such partitions are formatted using FAT variant. They hold information like device driver files, boot loader and system utilities that are required before loading Windows. It is recommended to take EFI System partition as the first one while partitioning the disk. However if any other partition like MSR (Microsoft Reserved Partition) or data partition is being used as the first partition, it may lead to Partition Recovery needs. Systems using first partition, which is other than EFI system partition, are observed with certain issues while users attempt to install Windows XP (Professional edition) or Server 2003 (Datacenter and Enterprise editions) on Itanium based system.
