Mac OS X supports various file systems, including HFS family of file systems and FAT (16-bit and 32- bit variants). But sometimes due to file system issues, users report that they encounter few entries in system log. These log entries signify certain ‘fseventsd’ and sync issues with file system. The solution may require formatting the drive. So users, receiving these error messages, are advised to backup their data. • FSEventsd is a userspace process, to which kernel passes corresponding notifications if any file system changes take place. Mac OS X uses FSEvents framework to register any directory tree changes, made by different applications.

Cause

FSEventsd errors usually indicate disk file system issues. This process runs at each boot as a daemon. A daemon is simply a computer program in Mac OS X, which runs in background and is not controlled by user. As FSEvents notifies and also keeps record of file system issues on directory basis, it is generally used by Time Machine and Spotlight. So, if system log is showing entries like the above ones, another reason could be that it is simply logging file system changes.

Solution

Possible solutions are:

• Users can try toggling disk journaling off and on. It is based on the fact that journaling affects the way FSEvents process interacts with disk.
• If problem persists, users are required to verify disk integrity and repair it. It can be accomplished using Disk Utility or by running fsck.
• If disk data structure issues still remain the same after using Disk Utility or running fsck, users can format the drive after taking data backup.
